Introducing Climate-Smart Permagardening in Ethiopia’s Drought-Affected Communities – Growing Resilience from the Ground Up
In the drought-affected communities of Shabeley Woreda, Ethiopia, where recurrent rainfall failures and water scarcity continue to threaten household food security, climate-smart Permagardening is offering a sustainable pathway towards resilience. Through an initiative implemented by the Rural Agency for Community Development and Assistance (RACIDA), with support from Johanniter International Assistance (JIA), vulnerable households in Woobley and Ara-Aska Kebeles are gaining practical skills and resources to transform limited household spaces into productive gardens, improve access to nutritious food, and strengthen their capacity to withstand climate-related shocks.
RACIDA, with support from Johanniter International Assistance (JIA), is implementing a climate-smart Permagardening initiative in Shabeley Woreda, Ethiopia, to strengthen household food security, improve nutrition, and build resilience to recurrent drought. Through practical training, water-efficient gardening techniques, and improved access to agricultural inputs, the initiative is equipping vulnerable communities with sustainable skills to transform small household spaces into productive food gardens. So far, 212 women, men, and community leaders have participated in practical training, while 200 households are targeted for support to establish their own Permagardens.
